How to Cancel Your Plan

Notice Period

Most postpaid carriers require 30 days' notice to cancel. Prepaid plans can usually be cancelled anytime since you've already paid for the service period.

Early Termination Fees

If you financed a device through your carrier, the remaining balance is due when you cancel. The CRTC caps early termination fees for service contracts — check your contract for details.

Steps to Cancel

Call your carrier or visit a store to request cancellation. Confirm your final bill date and return any leased equipment (e.g., router or TV box) to avoid extra charges.

How to Switch Carriers (Number Porting)

Your Right to Port

The CRTC guarantees your right to keep your phone number when switching carriers. Your carrier cannot refuse a port request or charge a fee for porting out.

How It Works

Sign up with your new carrier and provide your current account number and phone number. The new carrier handles the port — it typically completes within about 2.5 hours.

Tips for a Smooth Switch

Don't cancel your old plan first — it cancels automatically once the port completes. Make sure your device is unlocked, and compare plans before switching to get the best deal.

Cancellation and porting policies may vary by carrier and province. Always confirm terms directly with your carrier. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
