Social Insurance Number (SIN)

A SIN is a 9-digit number required to work in Canada, file taxes, and access most government benefits.

Apply online (fastest), by mail, or at Service Canada using the COPR (within 1 year) or PR card/permit plus a passport. SINs starting with '9' belong to temporary residents, tied to their work authorization.
