Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
An LMIA is a document a Canadian employer must usually get from ESDC before hiring a foreign worker, confirming no Canadian worker is available for the role.
A positive LMIA supports a closed work permit for a specific worker. Many permits are LMIA-exempt (most CUAET permits, some intra-company transfers, IEC). A job offer no longer adds CRS points directly but can help qualify for AIP/RCIP streams needing one.
Some details in this definition are flagged internally for a follow-up fact-check against the primary IRCC/provincial source; the text above is written conservatively pending that review.
